A freedman was a person who did not own any land, and worked for either a Ceorl or a Noble, renting land in exchange for work. Many of them went in debt because they had to pay rent from their master. The rent fee was usually, insanely high. If a freedman went into debt, he lost almost everything and became worse than a slave. A freedman had a wergild, while slaves did not.
